Re: Improvement of Escalators and Elevators
Dr. Vincent Boudreau, I am a student that recently transferred to the City College of New York. I can only see how amazing this school is, academically, with its student life and quality over all. But there is a concern that a lot of students and I have been experiencing. We have been having issues with the situation of the escalators and elevator in the school. We feel they don’t work properly and has been affecting our life at the school. I would like to tell you how this can be a problem and potential solutions to help improve the elevators and escalators.
Problems with Escalators and Elevators
For the past months we have been experiencing issues with the escalators and elevators throughout our campus. Most of the times, they are out of service or they function slower than usual. There is also limited service of escalators in important buildings. NAC building is the only building that offers service of escalators, which only goes up to the sixth floor, forcing students who need to go to higher floors to take the stairs or the elevators. Marshak, Shepard Hall and Steinman Hall only have elevators, with very slow service. Also, students with disabilities have difficulties to move within campus and it limits their options.
How is this situation affecting the students?
As a student of the City College of New York, I have experienced by firsthand how this really affects not only me, but all students in different aspects, such as:
– Students are forced to go up several floors using the stairs.
– Creates congestion.
– Leads tardiness.
– Insufficient accessibility for disabled students.
– Limited options to move within the building.
Suggested Solutions
The main goal is to find a solution to the situation of the elevators and escalators in campus. Here I propose potential solutions that could help improve this situation:
– Improve of the existing elevators and escalators.
– Maintenance only during weekends or nights (to avoid heavy traffic and delays in rush hours).
– Install new escalators in highly concurred buildings, like Marshak, Shepard Hall and Steinman Hall.
This is a topic that concerns a lot of students at the City College of New York, these are the issues that really affect all of us, therefore is important to evaluate and consider. My email is [email protected]. If you have any questions or need any clarification, feel free to email me, I am open to discuss these suggestions with you in the future
Reflection Essay – Memo
For the past assignment we had to write a Memo addressing a problem on campus and how we would want it to be improved. A memo is a document sent within an institution, and it is used to convey information to someone. It can be separated in paragraphs with headlines to make it easier to read and understand. It is not a letter, so it doesn’t require the sender’s and receiver’s information, and it doesn’t have to be signed. The purpose of my memo was to bring into attention the situation we have in our school with the elevators and escalators, to improve its service. I, as a student, wrote the memo to Dr. Vincent Boudreau, President of the City College of New York, since he has the authority to make changes around campus.
In this assignment I learned what a memo is, how to use it, and when to use it. Even though the concept of a memo was clear from what I learned is class, was difficult to prove my point and sustain it. I felt I didn’t have enough arguments to convince Dr. Boudreau, but probably if I made more research it would have been easier to express my point. It was very helpful to have my memo revised by the professor with comments, so the things I must improve of my memo were clear. Also reducing my chances of error. Overall, I believe this was a very helpful assignment that will definitely help me in the future when communicating with my colleagues or within the company I would work in.
